  This chapter critically examines the structural forces shaping the emergence and spread of Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs), with a particular focus on avian influenza and the poultry supply chain. Moving beyond conventional epicenter thinking, which attributes disease emergence to specific geographic locations, we argue that EIDs should be understood within broader ecological, economic, social, and political networks. Drawing on perspectives from critical geography, political economy, and ecological epidemiology, we explore how global circuits of capital – especially as they manifest in industrial livestock production – facilitate the conditions for disease outbreaks. By disaggregating the poultry supply chain, we highlight the differentiated vulnerabilities of key actors, including biotech firms, hatcheries, growers, processors, and retailers. While biosecurity measures are framed as a shared responsibility, power imbalances within supply chains determine who bears the greatest risks and economic burdens when outbreaks occur. We argue that the One Health framework, despite its emphasis on intersectoral collaboration, often fails to address these underlying structural drivers of disease emergence. We propose that supply chains themselves must become a central focus of pandemic preparedness and response. By shifting attention to the political economy of food systems, this chapter contributes to debates on how to reorganize global agriculture to mitigate future pandemics at their root causes.

  This introductory chapter situates industrial livestock production at the heart of converging crises – climate change, biodiversity loss, emerging infectious diseases (EIDs), and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) – and argues that, absent structural change, the current “Pandemic Era” will intensify. It synthesizes evidence that agro-industrial expansion, habitat disruption, and vertically integrated meat supply chains heighten zoonotic spillover risks and accelerate AMR, whose burdens fall disproportionately on low- and middle-income countries. While One Health has gained traction as an integrative framework, the chapter contends it remains narrowly operationalized – privileging surveillance and outbreak response over prevention and overlooking political-economic drivers such as corporate consolidation, trade liberalization, and the financialization of food systems. The chapter traces the global transformation of meat production – from the “Tyson model” of vertically integrated poultry to a consolidated grain-oilseed-livestock complex dominated by a handful of transnational corporations – and the attendant reconfiguration of landscapes, labor, and migration. Also, it maps the roles of global finance and commodity speculation in underwriting industrial expansion and externalizing ecological and health costs. The chapter reassesses One Health’s promise and limits, engaging critiques from different fields, and calling for a version that embeds environmental governance, social justice, and accountability. This chapter introduces the different contributions that together advance a One Health approach capable of tackling root causes and enabling more sustainable, equitable food futures.

  Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) pose an escalating threat to global poultry supply chains, with their management highlighting reconfigurations in economic geography through the increasing centrality of actors and processes beyond the farm-level. Taking HPAI outbreaks in Denmark as our empirical focus, we argue that outbreaks and their management reveal poultry growers’ lack of control over the labour process. Growers organize labour regimes in struggles with requirements imposed from other capitals and the state. Combining labour regime analysis with an emphasis on classes of capital, allows us to examine how this organizing is done in constitutively different ways.

  The temporality of global value chains is an important area of concern for economic geographers. This paper argues for the analytical value of closely examining the category of ‘turnover time’ as articulated in Marx’s work and subsequent historical-geographical materialism. We argue that turnover times of capitals in competition – hence struggles over time – can be conceptualised as a driving force behind what the GVC literature refers to as ‘chain governance’. This also helps explain the specific challenges faced by capitals depending on their position within the supply chain. To develop this argument, we draw on empirical material from the poultry supply chain in Norway and Denmark, particularly in the context of rising threats from highly pathogenic avian influenza. We argue that focusing on turnover time provides a novel angle not only on the supply chain’s intricacies but on our understanding of how industry actors respond to avian flu as an imminent challenge. In unravelling the egg production supply chain, turnover times emerge as distinct and multiple, depending on the role and materiality of the chicks, layer hens and eggs which we conceptualise respectively as fluid, fixed and commodity capital. Consequently, these variations in turnover times directly affect actors’ agency to manage avian flu outbreaks and strategise in the context of ever-rising pathogenic threats. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the temporality in the supply chain under the pressures of emerging infectious diseases and contribute to the broader literature on Marxist economic geography and critical GVC analysis.

  Focusing on mounting challenges to agro-industrial capitals posed by emerging infectious diseases, this paper revisits longstanding debates in critical agrarian studies scrutinizing the role of turnover time. Analyzing Norway and Denmark's poultry industries' recent confrontations with avian influenza, and by paying close attention to the questions of temporality and disaggregating the agency of capital, we elucidate the implicated classes of poultry capital along the broiler supply chain and their strategies in responding to differentiated challenges from avian influenza. In so doing, we argue for the relevance of conceptual tools derived from the under-acknowledged second volume of Marx's Capital.

  This study investigates how agricultural producers are incorporated into commodity circuits under contemporary capitalism, in the context of growing pressures from emerging infectious diseases. Focusing on poultry production systems in Denmark and Norway currently under threat from highly pathogenic avian influenza, we argue that understanding these dynamics requires an expanded conception of agriculture that accounts for the contractual arrangements binding poultry growers to both upstream and downstream actors in a supply chain defined by spatially dispersed operations with growers positioned midstream. Specifically, we explore how risk diffuses along supply chains, how forms of knowledge and resources originating upstream and downstream of the farm-level organise production processes, and the managerial efforts aimed at reconciling contradictory interests. We contend that these dynamics have significant implications for how outbreaks of infectious diseases ramify across variously situated actors in natural resource industries under contemporary capitalism.

  Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have intensified over the last decade, spotlighting the concept of “epicentre” as a means of locating disease origins. Although epicentre thinking can facilitate rapid interventions, it often overlooks the political-economic and ecological forces driving outbreaks. Drawing on critical geography, political ecology, and global supply chain analyses, we reconceptualise the epicentre as “a set of relations rather than a place”, emphasising how capitalist production, ecological disruption, and pathogen circulation intersect. From this relational standpoint, epicentres emerge as intersections of multiple capitals, rather than isolated points. Using HPAI in global poultry production as an illustration, we argue that biosecurity measures shaped by epicentre thinking often bolster industrial expansion while deflecting systemic critique. We conclude with a five-point research agenda for a relational geographical approach to disease outbreaks, highlighting turnover times, cost and risk distribution, producer incorporation, labour regimes, and governance mechanisms.

  Avian influenza outbreaks are recurring worldwide. In Norwegian and Danish media, fluctuating attention has been paid to these outbreaks and the coverage that exists largely portrays the situation as a distant problem, limited to so-called non-Western countries. In the present article, we have analysed news articles from two Norwegian and two Danish newspapers published in 2006/2008, 2017 and 2021 using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). By analysing linguistic articulations of risk and blame for avian influenza in Norwegian and Danish media, we explore how this portrayal creates discursive distinctions between risk and blame ‘here’ in Europe and ‘there’ in Asian and African countries. We discuss these discursive contrasts in light of Bergamo’s theory of ideology of health progress and Douglas’ understanding of hygiene as cultural ideas. Our analysis reveals that dominant portrayals of avian influenza in the news media construct particular discourses of blame, risk, and responsibility for disease emergence and spread that are ideologically underpinned by an understanding of disease management, meat production, and animal health in Norway and Denmark as exceptional. We argue that this may have implications for perceptions of places at risk of emergence and spread of viruses and the nature of responses for pandemic preparedness and disease eradication.

  The outbreak of flu pandemics in the 1950s and 1960s originating in Asia, in which novel bird flu viruses infected and killed humans, prompted the idea that a geographical area from which pandemics emerge, exists. This area, located in Asia has been imagined as the “epicenter” of pandemics. Some researchers suggested then that the agrarian landscapes of southern China formed an ecosystem in which viruses of human and animal origin can interact and evolve into new varieties with pandemic potential. Modernizing agricultural production and animal husbandry was proposed as a means to minimize pandemic risks. However, as new disease outbreaks have multiplied across the world during the last years it has become evident that industrial meat production is more likely implicated in the increase of disease transmission between animals and humans. Industrial meat production is characterized by concentration and integration, the reliance on standardized feed and fodder, the expansion of industrial agriculture into forested areas to produce the ingredients for making feed and fodder as well as by the increased use of drugs in animal production. This chapter examines the interlinked processes associated with industrial meat production and the increase in the occurrence of disease transmission between animals and humans. In doing so we will suggest that, pandemics and epidemics are not only public health issues but also require rethinking interspecies relationships in agriculture and beyond.

  The Anthropocene - the era of humans - refers to a time when humanity has left its indelible stamp on the planet, including its geology and biogeochemistry. Understanding the Anthropocene, where the risk of irreversible and catastrophic ecological damage looms on the horizon, is a daunting task and solutions seem to be difficult to come by. What we offer in this book consists of fifteen perspectives on the Anthropocene written by scholars with backgrounds in over a dozen academic disciplines - archaeology, biology, geology, cultural history, literature, art history, science and technology studies, anthropology, political ecology, geography and law. Together, they offer tools enabling us to grasp the Anthropocene as a multifaceted phenomenon that requires attention from across the social and natural sciences as well as the humanities. Unlike most academic texts, these chapters are written in a personal and engaging style indicating not only that the Anthropocene is a worthy subject of scholarly attention, but that its implications are existentially important to the authors, who are not just researchers, but also global citizens.

  A just energy transition is as much about acknowledging and acting on the socio-material needs of marginalised classes and groups as about informing inclusive and deliberative policy-making towards more equitable energy futures. In democracies, energy social scientists hold a privileged position and special responsibility to do both, thus offering critical support to decision-makers and practitioners. We articulate the challenges and opportunities for energy social scientists to embody solidarity in their research orientation and practices. First, we articulate the need to repoliticise, redemocratise, and negotiate a multiplicity of energy transitions. This includes recognising and engaging with multiple scales and contexts of marginality, repoliticising energy transitions, and addressing contestation and negotiation. Then, we argue that by embracing solidarity in research, energy social scientists can meet these needs in a holistic manner. We provide three principles through which social scientists can embrace solidarity to move energy research towards enhancing just transitions. These include (i) taking direct action and relating in solidarity, (ii) recognising responsibilities and limitations of energy social scientists, and (iii) nurturing a political realist culture of solidarity. In espousing these principles, we articulate solidarity as integral to pragmatic research practices in the face of urgency and rapid energy transitions.

  This article investigates how Xinka indigeneity disrupts the dominant order in Guatemala. Our analysis below focus on Xinka politics in a Rancièrian sense. Our main objective is to understand how, and to what extent, the Xinka are becoming visible bodies, sayable names, and audible voices, thus, disrupting the status quo in Guatemala. This article contributes to a growing body of scholarship examining the complex and heterogeneous political positions of indigenous peoples in Latin America under processes of state decentralization, economic privatization, and market deregulation, which transform the relationships between states and indigenous peoples and influence indigenous forms of organizing. Using the case of the Xinka conflictual engagement with a mining project as a lens we argue that Xinka opposition to mining articulates indigeneity and political mobilization, thus disrrupting the current social order in Guatemala. The Xinka become political subjects by claiming and exercising capacities they allegedly lack and by enacting rights they are not entitled to claim. The Xinka act as if they already possess that which is denied to them to challenge the inegalitarian partition of the sensible: what can be named, what can be seen, what can be counted. Their activism and their various tactics render their position, as rights-holders, explicit and accessible to an audience. These tactics include their irreverence as expressed in monitoring and deciding who is allowed to transit through a national road, bringing their cases to domestic and foreign courts, as well as detaining policemen and employees of the mining company. As we will discuss, the Xinka identity is not fixed in some essentialized past, but rather, it is a process that conjoins a collective position and the political subjects who articulate the position.

  This article investigates how migration and remittances affect forest cover in eight rural communities in Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico. Based on household surveys and remote sensing data, we found little evidence to support the widespread claim that migration takes pressure off forests. In the Chiapas sites, we observed no significant changes in forest cover since 1990, while in the Guatemalan sites, migration may have increased demand for agricultural land, leading to an average annual forest loss of 0.73% during the first decade of the millennium. We suggest that when attractive opportunities exist to invest in agriculture and land expansion, remittances and returnee savings provide fresh capital that is likely to increase pressure on forests. Our study also has implications for the understanding of migration flows; in particular, migration has not implied an exodus out of agriculture for the remaining household members nor for the returning migrants. On the contrary, returning migrants are more likely to be involved in farming activities after their return than they were before leaving.

  Guatemala is one of the most mining conflict prone countries in the world, with disproportionately high levels of violence accompanying the sector. Starting in the early 2000's, the rapid spread of mining projects throughout the country’s rural areas engendered widespread popular opposition among affected communities. Anti-mining activism in turn elicited a reaction from the government and the mining sector that was overwhelmingly characterised by violence, repression and criminalisation, making Guatemala one of the most dangerous countries in the world per capita for environmental activists. Drawing on fieldwork carried out between 2013 and 2017, this article examines why mining – an industry of relatively limited economic importance in Guatemala - is accompanied by such high levels of violence and repression. We suggest that mining, rather than having a high economic value, holds strategic value to the country’s powerful elite, and that violence is part of securing control over land more generally and operationalising the mining sector in particular. In recent years, Guatemala has witnessed the entrance of new transnational elites associated with multinational mining corporation. While these new elites control access to international markets and technology, they remain in a subordinate position vis-à-vis the old, local elites because the latter still exercise control over crucial political resources, networks of information and land. By forming alliances with and providing services to transnational mining corporations, a faction of the economic elite strengthens and secures its position as a powerful political actor and its access to profitable business, i.e., infrastructure development or selling energy to mining companies.

  My case study of a Guatemalan coffee cooperative illustrates how migrant aspirations shape and are being shaped by this rural institution, and how local dynamics and international flows interact. I understand aspirations to involve negotiations of the past in the present, thus serving as a compass for action. Opportunities for coffee production and access to land that are opened by the remittance economy provide more than material gains; they expand rural people’s sense of self and change their position in relation to others. While aspirations alone cannot secure broad social change, they provide hope that is crucial to endure difficult conditions.

  Human migration to and from rural areas is so prominent and persistent globally that land system science must understand how the movement of people is integral to land system transitions both at the origin of migration and at its destination. With a focus on Latin America, we review research on how land change affects migration and how migration affects land systems, to demonstrate that the relationship is complex and context-specific. Various types of migration evidence the challenges of managing land for multiple goals and the needs of diverse groups. A perspective that connects land change in multiple locations is needed. In particular, concepts of telecoupling and translocality can help to further understanding of how globalized economic systems link changes across distant places and capture the economic and non-economic processes that accompany migration and shape land change in multiple, connected locations. Land systems research must anticipate that migration will continue to contribute to complex land systems with multiple users and goals.

  In this article I discuss the factors contributing to the drafting and approval of the forestry incentives law (PINPEP) in Guatemala. This is a remarkable law because (a) it is among the few in the country recognizing property rights to land other than private property; (b) it has a stronger focus on subsidies and social benefits than on market mechanisms and; (c) the law is the result of the effort of forestry community organizations. My findings indicate that community organizations can, through their alliances with science-policy networks, participate in law-making and by that, in democratizing environmental governance. My study nuances the role of experts in environmental governance showing that their power and status should be understood as relational and historically contingent. Furthermore, some key and charismatic individuals can act as door openers to link community forestry organizations and science-policy networks. Although the identity of the grassroots organizations that participated in the process of making the law is tied to forestry, these organizations have a long history in the country. This history has been shaped by their experiences in exile and in refugee camps during the civil war as well as by their contact with development assistance organizations.

  Indigenous peoples around the world and particularly in Latin America are struggling to strengthen their control over land and the territories they inhabit. The strengthening of rights has come as a result of multiple processes both at national and global levels, in which the role and responsibilities of states have been transformed. Transnational processes challenge the presumed association between nation-states, sovereignty and territoriality. One of these challenges comes from international initiatives such as Reducing emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD). Global REDD in its broadness and national REDD in its uncertain early phases represent opportunities for private actors to negotiate with holders of land rights. In the Amazon, indigenous peoples’ territories, given their wide extension and that they are mainly forested areas, become interesting for all sorts of REDD actors. However, despite legal and rhetoric recognition of indigenous land rights, effective recognition is still lacking. In this paper, I will focus on one particular type of actor, so-called carbon cowboys – a term coined by journalists to signify actors who are willing to push the limits of established negotiation mechanisms to gain control over forest areas. I will focus on carbon cowboys’ practices and the responses from indigenous peoples in Colombia to highlight a common claim across the region, namely better state presence and regulation. The response from indigenous peoples’ organizations indicates that although territorial control is an important achievement, some form of state intervention is required to protect their rights in an uncertain REDD terrain.

  In this article we take a closer look at resistance to the practice of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in mining and energy projects in Guatemala. Collectivities resisting mining and hydropower projects in Guatemala are increasingly using the evaluations of EIAs conducted by international independent professionals. Reaching out to international experts is facilitated by local communities' engagements in transnational networks bringing together activists, NGOs, scientists, journalists and others. We argue that resistance movements resort to international professionals to challenge the limits imposed on them by the national legislation and institutional arrangements as well as by the way in which EIAs are performed in the country. Further, the engagements in networks that facilitate access to knowledge contribute to strengthen the legitimacy of communities' claims. Challenges to and complaints about EIAs are ways in which affected communities try to reclaim their right to participate in decision-making related to their local environment and the development of their communities. Both complaints about EIAs and the use of transnational networks to attain better participation in decision making processes at local levels, illustrated in this study for Guatemala, are common responses to the advancement of extractive industries and hydropower development across Latin America. The widespread of initiatives to challenge EIAs involving international experts in the region show that EIAs have become a sort of a transnational battleground.

  Las protestas de los movimientos contra la industria extractiva, particularmente en Guatemala, han sido enfrentadas en la mayoría de los casos con respuestas violentas de parte del Gobierno y de las compañías mineras. El análisis pone particular atención a la forma en la que las élites operan y construyen alianzas, y manejan los recursos y medios para imponerse, generalmente con violencia. El análisis presentado en este artículo sugiere que la respuesta violenta del Gobierno es el resultado de lo que la élite percibe como nuevas amenazas, en un contexto en el cual la vieja élite económica no ha logrado establecer una dominación hegemónica. La respuesta violenta está respaldada por una estrategia que resulta de una alianza discursiva y material en la que están implicados los militares, la élite económica –la vieja y la emergente– y el Gobierno. Se exponen y analizan también las demandas del movimiento de resistencia a la minería para entender de mejor forma el poder al cual se enfrentan los movimientos de resistencia.

  Global interest in and attention to forests have grown as concerns about global warming and climate change have taken a heightened position in international policy debates. Forests have been repositioned in international arenas as repositories of global value for their contribution to carbon sequestration and climate mitigation (Fairhead and Leach, 2003; Peet, Robbins and Watts, 2011). In this context, Latin American forests are seen as globally important in fighting climate change.

  The topic of elites has always been controversial in Latin American social sciences. Elites have been studied indirectly as landowners, capitalists, business-leaders or politicians, and have also been approached directly using concepts and theory from elite studies. Although there is a significant amount of literature on the role of elites in democratic transformations (see e.g. Higley and Gunther, 1992), elites have often been considered to be an obstacle to the formation of more democratic, prosperous and egalitarian societies (e.g. Paige, 1997; Cimoli and Rovira, 2008). This is also the case in the literature on environmental governance, in which elite groups are often considered to be an obstacle to sustainable development and an obstacle to establishing more equitable influence over the use and benefits of natural resources. Therefore, although an elitist conservation movement has long existed in Latin America, struggles to protect the environment from overexploitation and contamination have commonly been related to struggles against local, national and transnational elites by subaltern groups (Martínez-Alier, 2002; Carruthers, 2008; chapters 1 and 2 in this volume).

  Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) are instruments required to facilitate large development projects. In this article, we take a closer look at how such processes unfold in the case of hydropower and mining investments in Guatemala. Our findings suggest that here, with ESIAs, the responsibility of engaging with affected communities and citizens is left to the private sector, often with poor public follow-up. This has resulted in companies manipulating processes and strategic engagements with communities and local people to advance corporate interests. We discuss ESIAs as both technical devices as used by the corporate sector, and as possible spaces for public participation. Furthermore, we explore how communities can influence ESIAs for mining and hydroelectric projects in Guatemala, and examine the power relations that determine who are excluded and included in the process. Finally, we analyze how affected communities in Guatemala use ESIAs as means to subvert the order that has been imposed on them.

  In the wake of the African Swine Fever outbreak in Sweden in 2023, Norway decided to eradicate its own wild boar population. While the disease only affects wild boar and domestic pigs, it has affected hunting, farming and the overall relationship between rural populations and their natural environment. Simultaneously, the last decades have seen a significant agrarian restructuring in which specialization and intensification have been the norm. Today, only three supply chains deliver to the market in what has effectively become a market triopoly, leading to corporate concentration and oligopsony or even monopsony in some areas for farmers. As such, a constellation of socio-natural moments is differentially affected by the threat of the disease, leading to policy changes, supply chain adaptations and changes in rural aspirations to a good life. Focusing here on the latter, this paper seeks to contribute to earlier debates by treating aspirations as socially embedded and collectively mediated orientations toward the future. As such, aspirations are articulated through concerns that exceed the individual and even the household. They are bound up with the future of the village, the farm, the forest, the pork sector, and the wider rural social fabric. We seek to analyse the intersections of i) the collective reproduction of rural life, ii) territorial belonging, iii) moral obligations to the collective, and iv) the notion of a bio-secure modernity. As such, moving beyond the notion of aspirations as simply an expression of lifestyle preferences, this paper critically engages with disease as a driver of agrarian change.

  ¿Qué es lo que motiva a investigadores de las ciencias sociales de un país pequeño, periférico y lejano como Noruega a estudiar fenómenos sociales en América Latina? ¿En qué medida podemos decir que el pensamiento social noruego forma parte de un proyecto hegemónico occidental de conocimiento? ¿Poseen realmente algo en común los investigadores que, que por nacimiento o (mala) suerte tienen a Noruega como su base geográfica para su labor académica? Estas son algunas de las preguntas que exploramos en este libro. El propósito es analizar el pensamiento social noruego sobre América Latina en el contexto de la geopolítica noruega – aquí interpretada como “la geopolítica del débil”-, las políticas de cooperación y desarrollo, así como las diferentes corrientes académicas e ideológicas de índole internacional. Eso se hace a través de capítulos que tratan, entre otras temáticas: pensamiento social noruego anterior a las ciencias sociales; estudios sobre conflictos sociales y paz; estudios sobre los gobiernos izquierdistas; estudios sobre desarrollo; estudios agrarios y movimientos rurales; estudios sobre justicia; estudios sobre democracia y clivajes políticos; y estudios indígenas. Entre los principales hallazgos, lo más llamativo no son las características de las ideas noruegas sobre América Latina, sino la influencia que las ideas y las teorías sociales latinoamericanas han tenido en el mundo académico noruego. Eso se puede ver en diversos casos, desde el estructuralismo cepalino hasta las ideas de buen vivir. A pesar de la diversidad, se puede observar que distintos académicos noruegos se han acercado al estudio de América Latina como una región dividida –entre indígenas y no indígenas, entre mujeres y hombres, entre lo rural y lo urbano, entre oprimidos y opresores, entre víctimas y agresores, o entre ricos y pobres. Muchas de las investigaciones noruegas se han enfocado en las razones y la naturaleza de esas divisiones, y cómo son – o pueden ser– superadas.   In May 2015, the brutal killing of 14-year-old Chiara Páez by the hand of her boyfriend, horrified Argentina and led to the powerful women’s movement #NiUnaMenos’ demand for support and prevention solutions. The killing of Chiara Páez was the ultimate act of continuous episodes of violence against women, taking place both in public and private spaces. The purpose of this thesis: “Gender violence in Argentina: The role of women in support and prevention mechanisms from civil society to gender policy-making” is to investigate the role of women as stakeholders in the realization of prevention and support mechanisms to tackle and eradicate violence against women in all its forms. Argentina, because of its high number of femicides and strong female activism, serves as an example to explain the issue of femicide as a grave social phenomenon and the changes women may obtain in public policy. Although, Argentina enjoys great female political representation, women face challenges of structural and cultural violence on daily basis. UN Women has expressed deep concern towards the situation of gender-based violence in Argentina, which endure as well in Latin America and beyond. According to the UN, violence against women affects individuals on a personal level, but also society as a whole, which results “to have a high price in lost progress for each country” (UN Women, 2016).
