Vision

Universities play a vital role in addressing the major global challenges of climate change, biodiversity and nature loss, and growing social and economic inequality.

The importance of this work is emphasised by national authorities and higher education legislation, international climate and environmental agreements and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The University of Oslo offers the broadest range of academic disciplines in Norway and maintains a high international standard in sustainability-related research across the natural sciences, medicine, social sciences and humanities.

The Centre for Global Sustainability will actively work to strengthen and support the interdisciplinary research, education, and public engagement needed for a more sustainable and just global future. The centre will serve as an attractive meeting place for students, researchers, external partners, and visiting scholars, and will help develop academic environments with the potential to attract external funding within the field of global sustainability.

The centre is established with the purpose of:

  • Strengthening interdisciplinary sustainability research at a high international level.
  • Advancing education and lifelong learning on global sustainability across academic disciplines.
  • Creating an attractive arena for knowledge exchange and public engagement in global sustainability
  • Developing inclusive arenas for collaboration among students, researchers, and external partners
  • Increasing access to external funding for research and education
  • Providing a flexible structure and organisation that accommodates both permanent and temporary research communities, in line with the centre’s mission
